Description about the painting: The Culturally Deaf person is at the left, signing 'NO' to the parent and the professionals. The parent is looking at the Deaf baby, expressing an uncertainly feeling, not knowing if s/he is doing the right choice for the Deaf child. Another expression can be: 'I'm doing what's best for my child,' 'I want my child to be normal.' The professional says 'I am eliminating deafness.' The Deaf person on the left says, 'Do not do this to your child. Your child has every right to be Deaf. Let your child learn American Sign Language and English first.' This painting is from a Deaf perspective, on how they see issues that's been happening inside a hospital. The Early Hearing Detection Intervention leave out options that would help and give new parents suggestions on what is best for the Deaf baby. That includes teaching Cultural and Linguistics. Deafness is not a disease. Hospitals and audiologists lack informations on American Sign Language/English that are very beneficial for Deaf children. |
