This painting shows a box of monochrome crayons, a few color crayons and some missing crayons. It is about the situation of the whole box. It is to show what language deprivation looks like and that a few color crayons made it through. A very light, hard to see words, “Box of Language Deprivation Crayons” printed on the box, is how sometimes the mind sees.

What is the meaning behind a box motif? Depending on what or how a box is used, it can either be a resistance or an affirmation category. For instance, a jack-in-the-box can scare children, a magic trick with three boxes to determine which one has something in it. An opened box can symbolize to something that is safe haven, or a keepsake or to being trapped inside.
