This painting honors Betty G. Miller, widely recognized as the Mother of De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art). She was one of the co-founders of Spectrum, an art colony established by Deaf artists in Texas during the 1970s. Spectrum provided Deaf artists with a place to create, collaborate, and explore Deaf cultural expression through visual art.

In 1989, the De’VIA movement was formally established at the Deaf Way I conference in Washington, D.C. Betty G. Miller was one of the nine Deaf artists who authored and signed the De’VIA Manifesto, defining an art movement that expresses Deaf experiences and perspectives. Her groundbreaking work and leadership inspired generations of Deaf artists and helped establish De’VIA as an important artistic and cultural movement.
