This painting honors Chuck Baird, a world-renowned Deaf artist and one of the leading figures in Deaf View/Image Art (De’VIA). He was a co-founder of Spectrum, an art colony established by Deaf artists in Texas during the 1970s. Spectrum provided Deaf artists with a creative community where they could develop their artistic voices and celebrate Deaf culture.

In 1989, the De’VIA movement was formally established at Deaf Way I in Washington, D.C. Chuck Baird was one of the nine Deaf artists who authored and signed the De’VIA Manifesto, helping define an art movement that expresses Deaf experiences and perspectives through visual art.

Known for his bold colors, expressive style, and imaginative incorporation of American Sign Language into his artwork, Chuck Baird inspired generations of Deaf artists around the world. His legacy continues to influence the growth of De’VIA and Deaf cultural expression through the visual arts.
