This painting portrays Dorothy Miles wearing her iconic checkered coat during her early years in England. Dorothy was an internationally respected Deaf poet, writer, and performer whose work in British Sign Language and American Sign Language helped strengthen Deaf culture and connect Deaf communities around the world.

During her time at the Spectrum art colony in Austin, Texas, Dorothy wrote the poem “Spectrum,” celebrating the creativity and community of Deaf artists. To learn more about her life and work, please see her full biography and vlog.

It is a great honor that Mr. Carl Clayton, Dorothy Miles’ nephew from England, gave me permission to paint this portrait. I am deeply grateful for his support in helping preserve Dorothy’s legacy through this artwork.
