Which One Are You?

Which One Are You?      8 inch by 10 inch oil on canvas 2010

Description about the painting:

This painting was made in 2010, after I learned about Deafhood from Paddy Ladd's book, Understanding Deaf Culture in Search of Deafhood.  And in the meantime, I was searching for my lost identity. The making of this painting helped me find my identity. The Big D refers to Culturally Deaf after accepting myself as a Deaf person, knowing it is okay to be Deaf. The little d refers to deafness as a medical term and I was raised to be an oralist. My parents told me I could talk and hear the phone. My ear nose and throat doctor told my parents eventually my hearing would be gone. Back then sign language in a classroom was not allowed as the school was afraid my speech would go bad. Today, this painting has become a controversy. A group of oralists were offended by the painting Which One are You? They see the painting like the big D are looking down on them.  I paint from I see. The paintings that are resistance art are truth telling based on my experience as a d-Deaf person. Making a painting a resistance piece speaks for itself and it makes people ponder a lot and yet it still impacts many who have been exposed by social justice, human rights to fight Audism and discrimination. This painting shows three categories which is affirmation art, resistance art and liberation. I was once a little d that expresses resistance and the big D affirmation that became a libration art as a whole.
