The category of Resistance in my paintings confronts the realities of oppression, suppression, and marginalization experienced by Deaf people within dominant hearing society. Through a process of truth-telling, my work critically examines the historical and ongoing forces that have sought to control, silence, or diminish Deaf people’s language, culture, identity, and autonomy. Resistance challenges audist structures and practices while bringing visibility to Deaf experiences that have often been overlooked, misrepresented, or excluded from dominant narratives. These paintings serve as visual acts of protest, advocacy, and cultural resistance, asserting the right of Deaf people to self-determination, linguistic equality, cultural recognition, and full participation in society.
