ASL Growing All Around is inspired by my earlier work, Handflowers, painted in 2013, as well as Betty G. Miller’s artwork Growing in ASL. Miller’s work presents ASL as something living and continually developing, using the imagery of flowers to symbolize the growth and flourishing of signed language.

In this painting, I visualize a field of sunflowers through hand-shaped flowers, creating a connection between the natural growth of flowers and the continued expansion of American Sign Language (ASL). Each handflower represents the vitality, diversity, and expressive nature of ASL as it continues to grow and flourish within Deaf communities and beyond.

The sunflower field becomes a metaphor for the increasing visibility and presence of ASL. Just as flowers bloom across a field, ASL continues to blossom in more places, classrooms, communities, and generations. I can see this growth with my own eyes: the more ASL is learned, shared, and used, the more it flourishes.

Through ASL Growing All Around, I celebrate ASL as a living visual language—one that continues to grow, spread, and bloom all around us.
