Nellie Zabel 11 inch by 14 inch oil on canvas $200 see enlarge image
Nellie Zabel (1892-1991) was the first woman from South Dakota to earn a pilot’s license. She worked delivering airmail. While many would not hire her to fly because she was a woman, she won air races and did dangerous stunts during air shows. Along with Amelia Earhart and others, Nellie Zabel (Willhite) helped establish a women’s flying organization, the Ninety-Nines, still in existence today. Credited to Karen Christie.
