Description about the painting:
The painting was inspired by Katie Booth's book The Invention of Miracles: Language, Power, and Alexander Graham Bell’s Quest to End Deafness and Karen Christie's powerful review about Katie's book. After reading the book and Karen's review, I decided to paint. The painting focuses on many traumas that Deaf people have experienced in the past and in the present, is why the title is named for Generational Trauma. I picked out five paintings that I did in 2010 through 2013. The first top left painting is about #LiesAGBELLtoldmyparents Deaf survivors shared their stories. The second top left painting is about AUDISM. The third bottom left painting is "AGBELL Whips a Deaf Horse" and that is about how the system forces listening speech language over and over again. The fourth bottom left painting is about language deprivation and the fifth bottom right painting is about mask of benevolence. The painting of Alexander Graham Bell shows a fearfully expression because his biggest fear was failure. He was afraid he would fail something.
