Medium: Birch plywood with 2×4 studs, latex interior flat paint

Description:
This mural was collaboratively painted by students from the Illinois School for the Deaf and the Missouri School for the Deaf. It celebrates the strength of Deaf community, collaboration, and collective empowerment.

The mural is divided into six interconnected sections:

  1. A family with two Deaf children signs UNITY, representing families who support one another and work together to strengthen the Deaf community.
  2. A diverse group of Deaf people stands together, symbolizing inclusion, teamwork, and solidarity across different backgrounds and experiences.
  3. The signs COALITION and UNITY, painted in monochromatic colors, form a bridge that represents empowerment. Together, they illustrate how cooperation and shared purpose create a strong foundation for the community.
  4. American Sign Language fingerspelling spells D-E-A-F, I-N-C., reinforcing the identity and mission of the organization.
  5. The bridge created by Coalition and Unity symbolizes the connections that bring individuals, families, and organizations together into one strong Deaf community.
  6. DEAF, Inc. serves as the foundation that supports, strengthens, and sustains the community as a whole. It represents a place where people unite, advocate, and build a future together through collaboration and mutual support.
