Description:
Impossible Realities explores the lifelong impact of language deprivation experienced by many Deaf individuals. I describe this experience as an “Impossible Reality Syndrome”—a reality in which a person grows up without full access to an accessible language during the critical years of development. The effects can be profound and long-lasting, influencing cognitive development, communication, literacy, education, employment opportunities, social relationships, emotional well-being, and mental health.

At the center of the painting is an impossible cube inspired by the work of graphic artist M.C. Escher. The cube symbolizes the contradictions and confusion of living with language deprivation—a reality that often feels impossible to explain to those who have never experienced it.

The maze at the top of the cube represents the endless search for understanding and belonging, where every path seems to lead to another obstacle. The missing puzzle pieces at the bottom symbolize knowledge, experiences, and opportunities that were never fully accessible during childhood—pieces that cannot simply be recovered later in life.

The ladders reinforce this experience. One ladder rises while another descends, suggesting a journey with no clear destination. Like climbing an endless ladder or wandering through an endless maze, the struggle continues without resolution. Together, these symbols express the frustration, isolation, and complexity of language deprivation while illustrating the invisible barriers that many Deaf people continue to navigate throughout their lives.
