Description:
Dots Betrayal explores the complex and controversial conversation surrounding cochlear implants (CI) for Deaf babies and Deaf children.
The white words in the center of the painting state: “Dots equal the number of Deaf children who can now hear because of CI.” The colored dots represent Deaf babies and children who have received cochlear implants. In contrast, the black dots represent the hidden realities, concerns, and experiences surrounding the cochlear implant industry and how these issues have affected the Deaf community.
The black dots also symbolize “black holes”—representing experiences of being deceived, erased, or destroyed. They represent the loss of Deaf identity, language, culture, and community when Deaf children are denied full access to Deaf culture and sign language.
This painting contains a hidden message. In the past, there were 12 deaths connected to cochlear implant recalls and complications (see image no. 2).
Image no. 2:
The words written within the black dots include: recalls, oralism, audism, ASL banned, death, facial paralysis, Deaf identity gone, physical abuse, mask of benevolence, Deaf soul destroyed, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, perilymph fluid leak, vertigo attacks, tinnitus, taste disturbances, “forget that you are deaf,” CI takes away Deaf grandmother, CI takes away Deaf stepmother, CI takes away Deaf dad, CI takes away Deaf family, implant failure, CI destroys Deaf rights, cultural genocide, cochlear business is dirty business, Dimitry Dornan’s “Deaf as Scourge,” CI is controversial, learning disability, language delay, FDA—where are you?, meningitis, language deprivation, oral/aural only, Alexander Graham Bell, promotes AVT/LSL, CI on cats, fraud, American dream of normalcy, profit, bribing $$$$$, AGBAD, cure, more lies, linguistic genocide, EHDI, Dr. Karl White, more recalls, insurance fraud, device failure, Deaf babies have rights, lawsuits, implants on infants under one year old, Deaf schools in crisis, unethical dealings, and audism.
I visited the cochlear implant industry and saw a huge wall filled with dots. That powerful image inspired this painting and led me to create Dots Betrayal.
