Description:
The Invisible Interpreter is about an interpreter who is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). The waving hands represent Deaf people who feel relief when interpreters are present because they can relax, access communication, and fully understand what is being shared.
However, the interpreter also carries an unseen personal experience. As a CODA, the interpreter may feel isolated—existing between two worlds, not feeling fully Deaf or hearing, but uniquely CODA. The painting explores the complexity of identity, belonging, and the often invisible emotional experiences of CODAs within the Deaf and interpreting communities.
This painting was inspired by an article written by Amy Williamson, “The Cost of Invisibility: CODAs and the Sign Language Interpreting Profession.” https://streetleverage.com/2012/11/the-cost-of-invisibility-codas-and-the-sign-language-interpreting-profession/
