Description:
Second Wave of Oralism explores the continuation of oralism in the present day and its impact on Deaf babies and Deaf children. This painting is part of the Resistance category of De’VIA.
The herd of elephants represents professionals connected to the legacy of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, including cochlear implant corporations and related systems that promote a medical approach toward Deafness. The elephants symbolize power, influence, and the pressure placed on Deaf children and their families.
The yellow horses represent Deaf babies and Deaf children who were born Deaf. They are running and trying to escape from those who appear to offer help but may threaten Deaf identity, language, and culture—the “Mask of Benevolence.”
The blue tape covering the cracks of the dam symbolizes attempts to hold back or hide the continuing effects of oralism. As the water leaks through and spreads toward Paddy Ladd’s red mountains, it represents the ongoing struggle between oppression and resistance. The red mountains remain strong and standing, symbolizing Deaf resilience, Deafhood, and the strength of Deaf culture.
The yellow horses continue to fight to preserve their Deaf identities against forces that seek to take them away.
