This painting portrays a hearing child of Deaf adults, commonly known as a KODA (Kid of Deaf Adults), waiting patiently while her Deaf parents continue socializing with friends. Growing up within the Deaf community, she understands much of the signed conversation and carefully observes the interactions around her. Although she is accustomed to these gatherings and appreciates the strong social bonds within the community, she is also tired and eager to go home. The painting captures a familiar experience shared by many KODAs—the balance between patience, understanding, and the longing for the evening to finally end.
