Description:
Solitary Deaf Prison brings attention to the isolation and injustice experienced by Deaf prisoners who are incarcerated without meaningful communication access. Many Deaf individuals in prisons are denied qualified sign language interpreters, videophones, and other essential accommodations, leaving them cut off from information, services, and human connection.

The painting portrays a Deaf person behind prison bars, overwhelmed by despair and tears. Their hand forms the ASL sign for “Help,” expressing a silent plea for communication, dignity, and equal access. This work is a call for prison systems across the country to recognize the rights of Deaf prisoners and to provide the accommodations necessary for justice, safety, and human dignity.
