This painting is about Laurent Clerc from France, met Alice for the first time. He wrote his name ‘Clerc’ on a slate and fingerspelled the letter 'C' to Alice. She also wrote her name ‘Cogswell’. The picture in the background is the first school of American School for the Deaf, in Hartford, Connecticut.
