The painting depicts Gallaudet, Cogswell and Clerc who helped started the American School for the Deaf.
Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell had a daughter who was Deaf, named Alice Cogswell. She became the first Deaf student at ASD. Gallaudet went to England and met Laurent Clerc and then he went to France and asked Clerc to come to America. ASD started its first school in 1817.
